Kits marked Easy suit kids about 8 and up: four to six steps, every color straight from the pot. The rest are made for teens and grown-ups: twelve guided steps, mixing a few shades as you go.

  1. Get ready. Cover your table. Start with the preprinted fox canvas. Keep the background white. Use thin coats. Rinse your brush and pat it dry when you change colors.
  2. Paint the orange fur. Use orange for the head, outer ears, body and lower tail. Leave the face patches, chest, tail tip, scarf, paws and leaves white. Let it dry.
  3. Add the ivory fur. Use ivory for the face patches, inner ears, chest and tail tip. Keep the scarf, paws and leaves white. Let the paint dry.
  4. Paint the scarf. Paint every other scarf stripe forest green. Paint the open stripes golden yellow. Keep the black dividing lines easy to see.
  5. Paint the leaves. Paint the maple leaf orange. Paint the oak leaf golden yellow. Use your small brush near the edges. Let the leaves dry.
  6. Finish the little details. Use black for the paws and ear tips. Use black for the eyes, nose, smile and leaf stems too. Keep or add a tiny white dot in each eye.

  1. Get ready. Cover your table. Start with the preprinted ghost canvas. Keep the background white. Use thin coats. Rinse your brush and pat it dry when you change colors.
  2. Paint the ghost. Use ivory for the ghost and both hands. Paint around the eyes, mouth and pumpkin. Leave the bow, pumpkin, stem, cheeks and tongue white. Let the paint dry.
  3. Paint the bow. Use plum purple for the bow loops, knot and ribbon tails. Use a small brush near the black lines. Let the bow dry.
  4. Add the pumpkin. Paint the pumpkin orange. Follow each curved section from top to bottom. Paint the stem olive green. Keep the ghost's hands ivory.

  1. Get ready. Cover your table. Start with the preprinted pumpkin canvas. Keep the background white. Use thin coats. Rinse your brush and pat it dry when you change colors.
  2. Paint the pumpkin. Use orange for every pumpkin section. Paint around the eyes, nose and mouth. Paint both teeth orange. Leave the stem and face openings white. Let the paint dry.
  3. Paint the stem. Use olive green for the stem. Follow its bend with your brush. Use a small brush near the black lines. Let the stem dry.
  4. Finish the face. Use black for both eyes, the nose and the mouth. Paint carefully around the orange teeth. Check the edges, then lay the canvas flat to dry.

  1. Get ready. Cover your table. Follow the lines on your canvas. Leave the background white. Use your small brush to paint the eye centers and the cat's mouth black. Leave a small white dot in each eye. Keep the tongue white. Let it dry.
  2. Paint the pumpkin. Use your large brush to paint the pumpkin and its top edge orange. Use a thin coat. Leave the face holes, the opening behind the cat, and the cat white. Let the paint dry.
  3. Paint the cat. Use gray paint for the cat's head, paws and tail. Leave the inside of the ears, nose, tongue and white parts of the eyes white. Let the paint dry.
  4. Add the little details. Pink: Paint inside the ears, the nose and tongue. Leave the curved eye edges white. Dark brown: Fill the pumpkin's face holes and opening behind the cat. Keep teeth orange. Let it dry. With your small brush, follow the lines and whiskers in black. Add white eye dots.

  1. Light blue sky. Start on the preprinted canvas. Brush a thin light blue coat around the owl, branch, leaves and stars. Keep those shapes white. Rinse and blot your brush. Let dry.
  2. Branch and leaves. Paint the branch and little stems brown. Rinse and blot. Paint all five leaves green. Use the small brush at their tips. Keep the owl and stars white. Let dry.
  3. Tan feathers. Paint the outer head feathers, both wings and body tan. Follow the feather shapes with short strokes. Let dry.
  4. Cream face. Paint the heart-shaped face cream. Use the small brush near the eyes and feather tips. Let the cream dry.
  5. Bright details. Paint the beak, feet and four stars yellow. Rinse and blot. Paint both cheeks and inside the mouth pink. Let each color dry before painting beside it.
  6. Eyes and drying. Use black for the dark eye shapes, eyelashes and eyebrows. Keep the white eye rings and add white shine dots. Lay the canvas flat to dry. Wash brushes and wipe your palette.

  1. Light blue water. Start on the preprinted canvas. Paint light blue around the axolotl and sea grass. Keep the bubbles white. Use thin coats so the printed lines show through. Rinse and blot your brush. Let dry.
  2. Green sea grass. Paint all the sea grass green. Follow the long, curvy leaves with your brush, right to the canvas edges. Use a small brush near the axolotl and starfish. Rinse and blot. Let dry.
  3. A light pink axolotl. Paint the head, body, hands, feet and tail light pink. Leave the frilly gills, spots, cheeks and eyes white for now. Use a small brush near these shapes. Rinse and blot. Let dry.
  4. Pretty pink details. Use medium pink for the frilly gills, spots, cheeks and tongue. Follow the printed shapes with a small brush. Use thin coats and keep the eyes white. Rinse and blot your brush. Let dry.
  5. Starfish and eyes. Paint the starfish yellow; keep its dots white. Paint the dark eye areas black. Leave the hearts, curved shines and little glints white. Let dry, then use white to tidy the dots and bubbles.
  6. Dry and clean up. Check for small gaps and cover them with the matching paint. Lay your finished canvas flat to dry. Rinse your brushes, blot them gently and reshape the bristles. Wipe your palette and close the paints.

  1. Blue background. Paint light blue around the cow. Use a large brush, then a small brush near the edges. Use thin coats so the printed lines can show through. Rinse and blot your brush. Let dry.
  2. Fluffy tan fur. Paint the hair, face, outer ears and body tan. Brush in the direction of the fur. Leave a small white curve inside each ear for pink. Let the tan dry.
  3. Cream horns and muzzle. Use a small brush to paint both horns cream. Paint the large muzzle cream too. Leave the two small nostrils white for now. Rinse and blot your brush. Let the cream dry.
  4. A pretty pink bow. Paint the bow pink, including its knot and hanging ends. Add a pink curve inside each ear. Use a small brush and thin coats. Rinse and blot your brush. Let the pink dry.
  5. Bring her face to life. Paint the nostrils brown. Paint the dark eye areas black. Keep the eye crescents and shine dots white. Let dry, then use white to tidy the shines.
  6. Dry and clean up. Check for small white gaps and cover them with the matching paint. Lay your finished canvas flat to dry. Rinse your brushes and blot them gently.

  1. Begin with the outline. Protect your table. Follow the printed lines; use thin coats. Rinse and blot brushes between colors.
  2. Brush in the teal sky. Mix teal with a little white. Paint with short strokes. Add yellow wind highlights.
  3. Ground & branches. Paint branches and stems brown. Mix green with a little brown for the ground; leave leaves white.
  4. Fill the curling hat. Mix red with a little brown for rust. Paint thin curved strokes that follow the folds.
  5. Sleeves & leather. Mix green with a little brown for sleeves. Paint boots brown; add a speck of black along lower edges.
  6. Lay in autumn color. Mix orange with a touch of brown for pumpkins and the maple leaf. Alternate orange and yellow on other leaves.
  7. Skin & soft beard. For peach, mix white, a little yellow and a tiny touch of red. Paint nose and hands. Mix white with a touch of yellow for the beard.
  8. Light the lanterns. Paint frames, chains and rings black + a little brown. Use yellow in the glass; add white to yellow for flames and a soft glow.
  9. Shape the hat. Mix red, brown and a speck of black for fold shadows. Mix red with a little yellow for highlights. Blend along curves.
  10. Round the pumpkins. Mix orange with brown for groove shadows. Mix orange with a little yellow for highlights; follow the ribs.
  11. Pull fine beard strands. Mix white, a touch of teal and a speck of brown for shadows. Pull strokes toward the tips; add white and a little yellow highlights.
  12. Dry & clean up. Let the canvas dry flat. Wash and reshape brushes, wipe the palette and close paint pots.

  1. Prepare the canvas. Start with your printed 8 x 10 canvas. Protect your table. Use thin coats; rinse and blot brushes between colors.
  2. Set the atmosphere. Mix blue, a speck of black and white for a smoky sky. Paint around every outline; leave the shapes white.
  3. Ground & moonlight. Mix brown, a speck of black and a little white for ground. Use white + a little yellow for the moon; paint bats black.
  4. Block in the plum. Mix red and blue with a touch of brown for plum. Paint the hat, brim and coat; keep the band and buckle white.
  5. Add the autumn color. Mix yellow, a little red and a touch of brown for russet orange. Paint pumpkins and band, including buckle center. Leave faces and stems white.
  6. Nose & leather shoes. For peach, mix white, a little yellow and a tiny touch of red. Paint the nose peach and shoes brown.
  7. Shape the beard. Paint beard and mustache white. Mix white with a speck of black and brown for warm gray; pull curved strokes toward the tips.
  8. Finish the base colors. Mix green with a touch of brown for stems. Mix yellow with a touch of brown for the buckle rim. Let dry.
  9. Build depth. Mix red, blue, brown and a speck of black for hat shadows. Mix yellow, a little red and extra brown for pumpkin grooves. Blend softly.
  10. Define the lanterns. Over dry paint, fill the pumpkins' printed eyes and mouths with black using a small brush. Keep the edges controlled.
  11. Catch the light. Mix white with a little yellow for ivory. Add fine, curved highlights to the beard and small shine strokes to the shoes.
  12. Dry & care for tools. Let your canvas dry lying flat. Wash and reshape brushes, wipe the palette and close your paint pots.

Fall View

  1. Set up. Cover the table. Start with the printed outline. Use thin coats; rinse and blot brushes between colors.
  2. Blend the sky. Mix white with blue for the upper sky. Below, blend yellow into orange, then red plus white. Work horizontally around the outlines.
  3. Light the sunset. Mix white with yellow for the sun and bright cloud streaks. Mix white with red for softer streaks. Let the sky dry.
  4. Layer distant ridges. Mix blue with white for the far ridges. Use less white in each nearer ridge. Follow the printed curves; let adjoining bands dry.
  5. Deepen the valley. Mix blue with green and a little black. Fill the nearest forest slopes. Tap upward with the small brush for pointed treetops.
  6. Block in the rocks. Mix black, brown and a little white. Brush this gray-brown base across the rock slabs. Leave the printed fallen leaves white.
  7. Paint the tree. Mix brown with a little black. Fill the trunk and branches with lengthwise strokes. Keep the foliage white. Let the base dry.
  8. Build autumn color. Mix red with a little brown. Dab into the canopy and shrubs. Add orange over most areas, leaving darker pockets visible.
  9. Lift the leaves. Mix orange with yellow. Tap small clusters along the lit foliage edges, leaving gaps. Use red, orange and yellow on fallen leaves.
  10. Catch the bark light. Mix brown with yellow and a little white. Drag a nearly dry small brush along the trunk's left edge and branch tops.
  11. Define the ledges. Mix white with a little black and brown. Skim the upper rock edges with a nearly dry brush. Keep the dark cracks visible.
  12. Dry and clean up. Lay the canvas flat until fully dry. Wash and reshape brushes, wipe the palette and close the paint pots.

  6. Warm apricot petals. Mix orange with white for apricot. Fill the upper-right flower with curved strokes. Leave its center white.
  7. The rose-red flower. Use rose red for the five central petals. Pull strokes from each petal tip toward the center. Leave the center white.
  8. Golden buds & centers. Mix yellow with a touch of brown for gold. Paint the small buds and all flower centers. Let every base coat dry.
  9. Blend the petals. Shade pink with rose red; apricot with orange; red with rose red + brown. Add white to each for highlights. Feather wet edges with a clean, damp brush.
  10. Leaf & vase highlights. Mix green + yellow for leaf highlights; blue + a little black + white for vase streaks; white + a speck of brown for white-band shadows. Follow the curves.
  11. Berries & final details. Mix blue with a little black for berries. Add white to this mix for shine dots. Shade the yellow centers with brown; dot with yellow and white.
  12. Dry flat & clean up. Let the completed canvas dry lying flat. Wash and reshape brushes, wipe your palette, and close the paint pots.

Starry Night Sunflower

  1. Prepare your space. Protect your table. Follow the preprinted lines. Use thin coats; rinse and blot brushes between colors.
  2. Lay in the sky. Mix blue with a little black. Paint only the sky around the flowers and greenery. Keep all plant shapes white.
  3. Turn the blue swirls. Mix blue with white. Follow the sky curves with short strokes, leaving darker gaps. Let dry.
  4. Light the stars. Mix white with a little yellow. Dab star centers and curved light trails. Keep some blue showing.
  5. Paint both flowers. Paint every petal yellow, from its base toward its tip. Keep seed heads and greenery white. Let dry.
  6. Warm the folds. Brush orange along petal bases and one side of each fold. Blend into yellow with outward strokes.
  7. Paint stems and leaves. Mix green with a little blue. Fill stems, leaves and curled flower backs, following their length.
  8. Fill the seed heads. Mix brown with a little black. Fill both seed heads; use small dabs along the rims. Let dry.
  9. Shape the greenery. Mix green with yellow for light edges. Mix green with blue and a speck of black for shadows. Pull curved strokes.
  10. Lift the petals. Mix yellow with a little white. Pull slender highlights from base to tip on dry petals; leave orange folds visible.
  11. Stipple the seeds. Dab brown, orange and yellow onto dry seed heads. Mix white with yellow for a few bright dots. Keep dark gaps.
  12. Dry and clean up. Lay the canvas flat until fully dry. Wash and reshape brushes, wipe the palette and close the paint pots.

  1. Prepare the canvas. Protect your table. Start with the printed canvas. Paint the background white in thin coats, working around the cow and crown. Let dry. Rinse and blot brushes between colors.
  2. Map the dark fur. Mix brown and black for deep brown. Fill the darkest fur locks, nostril openings and dark horn rims. Follow long curves with the small brush. Leave lighter areas white. Let dry.
  3. Build warm brown. Mix brown and yellow for medium brown. Fill middle-tone fur locks and small brown flower centers. Pull strokes outward and down. Keep dark gaps visible; use thin coats and let dry.
  4. Light the shaggy coat. Mix white, yellow and brown. Paint light locks with tapered strokes and base-coat the tan muzzle. Add a little brown for deeper tan areas. Follow the direction of each lock.
  5. Lay in the horns. Mix white and brown for ivory. Cover the pale horn areas with curved strokes from base to tip. Add a little more brown for the lower stone-colored bands. Leave dark bands white.
  6. Shape both horns. Mix brown, black and white for the dark horn bands. Follow the long outside curves. Blend their inner edges into the saved ivory mix. Keep both fine tips clean.
  7. Paint the soft muzzle. Mix white, brown and a small dab of red for pink-tan. Add rosy muzzle areas. Add a little yellow for its warmer edge. Preserve dark nostrils and leave pale accents white; dry.
  8. Finish the nose. Refine nostrils and the mouth line with the step-2 dark mix. Add white to the step-7 mix for pale nose rims; use less white for rosy shadows. Keep the nostril openings dark.
  9. Fill the leafy crown. Mix 2 parts green with 1 yellow for the leaves. Add a small dab of blue for deeper leaves. Fill around the flowers with the small brush. Keep petals and centers white. Let dry.
  10. Open the daisies. Mix 8 parts white with 1 yellow for cream petals. Fill each petal, brushing outward. Paint centers yellow; add a dab of brown to yellow for their lower shadows. Leave coral blooms white.
  11. Add coral flowers. Mix 2 parts white, 1 red and 1 yellow for coral blooms. Fill petals, preserving green bases. Refine small dark flower centers with the step-3 brown. Touch up edges with saved mixes.
  12. Dry and clean up. Lay the canvas flat until fully dry. Wash and reshape brushes, wipe the palette and close all paints.

Paint with fabric: Kinusaiga kits

Kinusaiga (kee-noo-sigh-gah) is a Japanese fabric art: the picture is cut as grooves into a foam block, and you fill it one section at a time. Peel the backing off a section, use it as a template to trim your fabric, press the fabric onto the sticky foam and tuck its edges into the grooves. No sewing and no painting, and it goes in its frame when you're done.

Made for teens and grown-ups, or younger crafters with a grown-up's help: the tucking tool is a seam ripper, and its point is sharp.

  1. Plan your fabrics. Lay the foam flat. Choose sky blues and pale yellows for the sky and sunbeams, gold for the sun, greens for the hills, brown for the branch, royal blue for the wings and orange for the breast.
  2. Peel one section. Peel the protective paper from just one section to expose the adhesive. Keep the other sections covered while you work.
  3. Cut the fabric. Use the peeled paper as a shape guide. Leave about 1/4 inch (6 mm) extra on every side for tucking. At the outside edge, leave enough to wrap around the foam. Trim later if needed.
  4. Press and tuck the edges. Press the fabric onto the adhesive. Use the side of the seam ripper, not its sharp point, to gently tuck the edges into the grooves. Trim excess if it bunches, keeping enough to tuck securely. Wrap outside-edge fabric around the side and tuck it into the side grooves.
  5. Repeat and finish. Repeat steps 2–4 for each section. Start with the sky, sunbeams, sun and hills. Add the branch, then the bird's breast, head, wings, tail, beak and feet. Tidy loose threads, then fit the foam into the frame from the back and gently press it to the depth you like.

    Create a space

    Cover the table, grab a cup of water — the one everybody forgets — and a paper towel. A paper plate makes a good palette for a canvas.

    Start painting

    Bring your figure to life, or follow the canvas guide a step at a time. Plaster drinks the first coat right up — that's normal, not a bad brush.

    Let it dry

    Thin coats, and let each one dry before the next. Give it an hour and it's a keeper — shelf, windowsill, fridge door, grandma's mail.

    Clean up and share

    Wash the brush while it's still wet and it'll be good for the next kit. Then send us a picture — we're @RandRPaintYourOwn.

    Paint kit questions, answered

    What age is this for?

    Plaster paint kits are for four and up, with a grown-up nearby. The figures are small and solid — not a toy for babies or anyone still putting things in their mouth. Canvas paint kits are made for teens and grown-ups, except the ones marked Easy, which suit kids about 8 and up. Fabric paint kits are for teens and grown-ups too; younger crafters can join in with a grown-up handling the seam ripper.

    What is a fabric paint kit?

    Kinusaiga (kee-noo-sigh-gah) is a Japanese fabric art — think of it as painting with fabric. Your kit has an 8 x 8-inch foam block with the picture cut into it as grooves and a peel-off backing on every section, all the fabric for the picture, a seam ripper and a frame. You'll need a pair of small scissors. The fabrics may not match the picture exactly, so place them however you like.

    How does it work?

    One section at a time: peel the protective backing off a section to expose the adhesive, and use that piece of backing as a template to cut your fabric, leaving about 1/4 inch (6 mm) extra all round. Press the fabric onto the sticky foam, then tuck the edges into the grooves with the side of the seam ripper. At the outside edge, leave enough fabric to wrap around the side of the foam. When every section is filled, fit the foam into the frame.

    Do I need to know how to sew?

    No. There's no needle and no thread: the adhesive foam holds each piece, and its edges tuck into the grooves. No paint either — the fabric does the coloring.

    Any tips for a first fabric paint kit?

    Peel only the section you're working on and keep the rest covered, so the adhesive stays clean. Cut generously and trim later; if an edge bunches, trim a little, but keep enough to tuck securely. Tuck a little at a time and don't stretch the fabric. Use the side of the seam ripper, not its sharp point, and never force it into the foam. Work from the background in to the subject.

    What comes in a canvas paint kit?

    An 8×10 canvas, stretched on a frame and ready to hang, with the design printed on in light gray lines; the paint pots for that painting; a brush; and a printed guide that pictures every step and the finished painting. Add a cup of water, some paper towels and a paper plate to use as a palette, and you're set.

    Do I need to know how to paint?

    No. The outline is already on the canvas, so there's nothing to draw, and the guide goes one step at a time. On kits marked Easy every color comes straight from the pot; on the others you'll mix a few shades along the way, and the guide tells you exactly which.

    What kind of paint is in the kit?

    Plaster paint kits come with non-toxic washable kids' craft paint, three colors picked to suit the figures — want a particular palette for a party? Say so in your order. It comes out of most clothing in the wash, but paint clothes are still the smart call. Canvas paint kits come with acrylic paint, which doesn't wash out once it dries — cover the table and wear something you don't mind.

    How many figures come in a plaster paint kit, and can I choose?

    One to three, depending on size. Big shapes like the tractor come one to a kit; little ones like ladybugs and seashells come two or three. If you want a specific shape — the ladybug, say, and nothing else — put it in your order notes. We keep plenty of every shape in stock, so we can almost always pull exactly what you asked for.

    Is the plaster fragile?

    It's solid cast plaster, not a hollow shell, so it holds up to normal handling and being carried around. Dropped hard on tile it can chip or break — it's plaster, not plastic. We cure every figure fully before it goes in a kit.

    How fast can I get them?

    Plaster paint kits, quickly, usually. We pour ahead and keep a full shelf of cured figures on hand, so most orders are just a matter of packing them up. For canvas and fabric paint kits, or a specific date, put it in the "needed by" box and we'll tell you straight whether we can hit it.

    How do orders and shipping work?

    Add kits to your order on this page and send it — we reply with a total, and you can pay by credit card, Venmo or cash. There's no minimum, and nothing has to match: one kit, a stack of one theme, or a mix of plaster, canvas and fabric. We're in Roanoke, Virginia — pickup and hand-off anywhere in town or a short drive out are free. Everywhere else goes out in a padded mailer at actual postage cost.

    Can I return a kit?

    No — every kit is handmade and packed to order, so we can't take returns. If something arrives broken or is missing from your kit, email info@randrpaintyourown.com with a photo and we'll sort it out.

    Should I seal a plaster figure after painting?

    You don't have to — the paint dries fine on its own. If you want it shiny and waterproof, a coat of clear acrylic spray or Mod Podge from any craft store does it. Grown-up job.
